In September 2024, Ford announced its return to India by submitting a Letter of Intent (LOI) to the Tamil Nadu Government. The American automaker was supposed to disclose its strategy for the Indian market by January, 2025. However, the plan didn’t go as expected, and all excitement seemed to be in vain. Ford is re-evaluating its India return and will come up with a final decision in late summer.
Ford spoke person said that the company remains “committed to utilising the manufacturing capabilities in Chennai to serve global markets and are thankful to the govt of Tamil Nadu for its continued support as we advance our plans. Further details regarding the type of manufacturing, timelines and other specifics will be shared in due course and we have nothing additional to share at this time.”
One of the major reasons for Ford’s delayed return to India is President Donald Trump’s two-pronged automotive strategy, which caused a major disruption in the North American vehicle market. The American government aimed to bring automotive manufacturing back to the country. Trump’s administration recently imposed traffic on vehicles and parts imported from Canada and Mexico, as well as on Canadian and Mexican energy imports.
The second reason is the investment required to make Ford’s Tamil Nadu facility operational again. If the American automaker plans to revive its Chennai-based manufacturing plant (in Maraimalainagar) for EVs, it will need nearly $100 and $300 million of investment which is quite high.
Ford bid farewell to the Indian market in 2021. There were multiple reasons behind this decision including the increasing financial losses, high operational and import costs, poor sales and a lack of economies of scale. The American automaker had a 15 percent market share in the early 2000, which declined to less than 2 percent by 2021. The carmaker stopped manufacturing cars in India and shut down both of its facilities, but continued to provide support to existing Ford customers.
