Ford has made up its mind to utilize the Chennai plant for engine and component manufacturing and exporting. It is among the company's global plans, with a factual outline of the plan to be communicated during the second quarter of this year. Manufacturing of the vehicle won't be part of the Indian business of Ford from this time onward.
The Chennai Maraimalai Nagar plant has remained shut since mid-2022. There were reports of restarting the plant earlier, but there was no word on whether Ford would resume production in India or not. The latest reports have now confirmed that Ford's plans are going ahead. The plant will be utilized to manufacture engines and ancillary components with an emphasis on exports.
Ford discontinued automobile manufacturing in India towards the end of 2021 and exited the market in early 2022. While the company had been present in India for more than 25 years, it was unable to make a remarkable contribution to the rapidly growing Indian automobile industry. Thus, Ford has stopped paying attention to the sale of cars in India but is now concentrating on exports.
Ford's intention to utilize its Chennai factory in making engines to be exported is an initial effort at bolstering its international presence. The facility will no longer engage in making vehicles but be devoted entirely towards manufacturing engines aimed for exports.
Despite the exit from the Indian car market, Ford's dedication to India never wavers. Ford's top brass recently met with Tamil Nadu government officials and reaffirmed the company's faith in India. Though the finer points about products produced at the Chennai plant remain to be divulged, the export market's engine production will clearly be the focus area.
This is one of the portions of Ford's worldwide strategy of concentrating on manufacturing and exporting components. Ford has export facilities in its Sanand plant, where the automaker had exported most of its factory to Tata Motors two years ago. Sources have revealed that Ford's export-based projects are almost over, with a proper announcement being planned in the near future.
Earlier, Ford had considered bringing electric vehicles to India. Ford also thought of bringing popular models like the Endeavour, Everest, and Mustang to India. All these plans appear to be in the backburner as Ford is now considering export-oriented plans. The future of Ford in India appears to be purely export-oriented, with it closing down its dealership chain in India and leaving behind only service centers.
