In 2025, the Indian SUV market will witness a major shift towards electrified solutions and hybrid technology. Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest PV manufacturer, is set to introduce the e Vitara as its first electric offering along with it own strong hybrid powertrain with the Fronx. The carmaker already has the Grand Vitara strong hybrid SUV, powered by Toyota’s Atkinson strong hybrid powertrain.
The Maruti e Vitara and Maruti Grand Vitara are two compelling choices, offering zero emissions with lower running costs and fuel efficiency with practicality, respectively.
However, the question is which of these SUVs make more sense for buyers in 2025? Let’s dive into a detailed comparison to find out.
- Based on a skateboard platform, the Maruti e Vitara will come with the 49kWh and 61kWh battery packs, sourced from BYD. Both batteries are paired to the front-axle mounted motors. The smaller battery pack delivers a claimed power of 143 bhp, while the larger battery offers 173 bhp. Maruti Suzuki hasn’t yet revealed its exact range figure, but confirmed that the electric SUV will return an MIDC range of over 500km.
- The Maruti Grand Vitara hybrid uses a Toyota-sourced 92 bhp, 1.5L, 3-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine, paired to an electric motor pushing out a maximum power of 79 bhp and 141 Nm of torque. The combined power output stands at 115 bhp. It comes with a e-CVT gearbox.
Verdict: The electric Vitara is expected to offer better acceleration and lower running costs, whereas with the Grand Vitara hybrid you won’t have range anxiety. Additionally, the latter benefits from an extensive fuel station network.
- The exact running cost of the Maruti e Vitara is not available yet. However, it’s expected to offer a lower running cost with Rs 1 or Rs 2 per/km depending on electricity rates.
- The Grand Vitara hybrid ensures higher fuel efficiency. Maruti Suzuki claims that the SUV’s strong hybrid version offers a mileage of 27.97kmpl.
Verdict: The electric Vitara will prove to be a long-term cost-saving option, while the Grand Vitara hybrid is a more ideal choice for long distance travel.
- The interior of the e Vitara looks futuristic with a floating 10.25-inch screen for infotainment and instrument console, a 10.1-inch instrument cluster, rectangular AC vents with brushed silver surrounds, physical buttons for the climate control, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a wireless phone charger, a 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat, single zone auto climate control, 7 airbags, Level 2 ADAS and more.
- The Maruti Grand Vitara, being a premium offering, comes packed with several advanced goodies including the ventilated front seats, a 360 degree camera, leatherette steering wheel, a 7-inch fully digital instrument cluster, wireless charger, Head-up display, a panoramic display, hill descent control, tyre pressure monitoring system, a 9-inch SmartPlay Pro+ infotainment system, auto folding wing mirrors, ambient door lighting and more.
Verdict: The e Vitara will be the first Maruti Suzuki to feature ADAS suite along with several other advanced features. The Grand Vitara misses out on the ADAS, but offers most of the comfort and connectivity features.
- Aiming to expand its charging infrastructure, Maruti Suzuki announced a new ‘e for Me’ strategy under which the company will setup fast chargers across all its dealerships in top 100 cities. It will also launch a dedicated charging app and over 1,500 EV-specific service centres in more than 1,000 cities.
- There are no charging issues with the Grand Vitara. You get petrol stations everywhere.
Verdict: The Grand Vitara hybrid is surely a better choice for buyers who don’t want to deal with charging hassle.
- The Maruti e Vitara is a futuristic and greener choice with low running costs. Additionally, this electric SUV will provide access to several advanced safety features, including the Level 2 ADAS.
- The Maruti Grand Vitara hybrid is more practical and fuel-efficient along with the conventional refueling facility.
