Mercedes Benz India has confirmed the launch of the EQS all-electric sedan in the Indian market. Initially, the luxury EV will be introduced only in the AMG 53 4MATIC+ version. This will be followed by the locally assembled EQS 580 which will debut around the festive season. This is the second EV offering from the German carmaker and will be followed by the launch of the EQB all-electric luxury SUV towards the end of 2022.
The four-wheeler gets a familiar design that adorns all EQ models. The addition of the AMG moniker has brought some sporty character to the EV with elements like a large chrome grille, aggressive splitter, body-coloured diffuser and a prominent boot lip spoiler among other bits.
The AMG treatment continues on the inside with bits like a flat bottom steering wheel finished in Nappa leather, sporty AMG pedals and sports bucket seats. Other prominent highlights of the cabin include ambient lighting, red stitching on various panels along with the brand’s latest triple display Hyperscreen infotainment system powered by MBUX.
It also comes loaded with modern features like a Head-Up Display, 3D Burmester Surround Sound System, heated seats with massage function and more.
Based on the AMG.EA platform, the EQS uses two electric motors, one on each axle. This set-up sends power to all the four wheels bringing the 4MATIC+ system into play. The powerful electric motors are paired to an 108 kWh battery pack, delivering a claimed range of 580 kilometres on a single charge.
The system supports up to 200 kW fast charging, adding 300 kilometres of driving range in just 15 minutes. This drivetrain set-up produces a maximum power output of 658bhp and peak torque of 950 Nm, helping the car sprint from 0-100 kmph in just 3.8 seconds. Standard equipment on offer are active rear-axle steering, AMG Ride Control+ air suspension with adaptive dampers and ‘AMG Sound Experience’ which adds acoustic sound effects for an immersive driving experience.
For buyers looking to add some spunk to their car, Mercedes offers the AMG Dynamic Plus Package which lends the vehicle a higher power output of 761 bhp and 1020 Nm of peak torque. This version hits 0 to a ton in under 3.4 seconds. Top speed of both versions is electronically limited to 250 kmph.
The Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ is set to launch on the 24th of August in India. Once introduced, the all-electric performance luxury sedan will lock horns with Audi RS e-Tron GT and Porsche Taycan Turbo S.
Tata Motors will launch the new Sierra ICE and EV before the end of this year - Harrier EV launch expected in May-June 2025.
