Mercedes-Benz has officially announced that it is developing an all-electric variant of its classic E-Class sedan. The electric E-Class will be out on the roads by 2027 as part of the company's strategy to introduce more electric vehicle (EV) models. The new EV will be competing with other luxury electric sedans produced by Tesla and BMW, giving customers a luxury driving experience through a full electric powertrain. The E-Class EV will come with new technologies, increased driving ranges, and a new design on the back of the success of the existing petrol and diesel E-Class. Mercedes hopes to cater to the rising trend of electric cars in markets globally, including India.
The new electric E-Class will look like the current petrol and diesel versions of the E-Class. The teaser images show a profile that's in line with the traditional E-Class sedan but with adjustments to accommodate both combustion-engine and electric features. The new E-Class EV will be larger than its petrol counterpart and will have sophisticated technologies like driver assistance systems (ADAS), Level 3 autonomy at maximum.
Mercedes-Benz will launch the E-Class EV alongside petrol and diesel versions that are already present in the market. Mercedes retails the E-Class in the LWB version in India between Rs. 78.5 lakh and Rs. 92.5 lakh. The electric version would be a strong rival to steal sales from the existing EQE Sedan that the company already retails in international markets.
The E-Class EV will be head-to-head with electric Teslas and BWMs. Higher in price with more premium features and longer driving ranges, the Mercedes E-Class EV will appeal to those who want a luxury, electric sedan. The vehicle will be equipped with new technologies and innovations from its combustion engine equivalent, which will put it at a competitive level within the market for electric sedans.
Even as the E-Class EV launches globally first, a launch in India can be expected as well. Mercedes-Benz hasn't confirmed its Indian release as of now but the E-Class EV is expected to receive a launch in the Indian market some years after the global release. As the demand for electric vehicles rises in India, the electric E-Class can be that kick in the right direction that will make such cars available in local markets for Mercedes-Benz.
Mercedes-Benz also plans to add more electric vehicle models in the near future, including the electric E-Class. Mercedes-Benz already announced plans to introduce more electric models, such as an electric GLC-Class and electric C-Classes. Mercedes-Benz will produce the new models on its MB.EA platform, which will be used only for electric vehicles. The firm also has a vision for a complete overhaul of its S-Class in 2026 that will be accompanied by the newest electric and hybrid technology.
The battery-electric E-Class is one piece of a broader strategy to move Mercedes-Benz further into the electric vehicle space and equip it with a robust lineup of EVs across multiple segments such as sedans and SUVs.
