We always wait with bated breath for the release of a luxury limousine, and only a few have pushed the boundaries of opulence like Mercedes-Maybach S-Class. The standard S-Class was already an impressive display of luxury on four wheels, and the Maybach S-Class raises the bar even higher. The luxury limo is the carmaker's first launch of 2022, and it will be available in two variants: the locally assembled S580 (Rs 2.5 crore) and the imported S680 (Rs 3.2 crore).
Mercedes-Benz had already transitioned from the traditional three-box silhouette to a flowing design that appears very futuristic, and the Maybach follows the same basic recipe. Still, a slew of visual differentiators ensures that this isn't mistaken for an 'ordinary' S-Class. The most noticeable of these is the dual-tone paint job, which lends the Maybach S-Class 2022 a royal air. The Maybach S-Class may appear identical to the regular model when viewed from the front, but keen observers will notice the additional bling on the Maybach. The Maybach S-Class receives powerful LED headlamps with 1.3 million micromirrors inside.
The S580 comes with 19-inch alloy wheels, whereas the S680 has larger 20-inch forged alloy wheels with a high gloss polished ceramic finish. The Maybach also gets a two-tone paint finish with an optional pinstripe, with the paint applied by hand to the Maybach S-Class. When you look to the side, you'll notice small but significant details like the flush-fitted door handles and the beautifully designed alloy wheels. The V12 badge is also present on the flanks of the S680, but more on that later. It's also worth noting that the wheelbase of the 2022 Maybach S-Class is 180mm longer than the standard model, which should make rear-seat passengers very happy.
Step inside the Maybach S-Class, and you'll find a luxurious cabin that shares the same basic layout as the standard S-Class, but the Maybach is even plusher. A 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen for infotainment remains standard, running Mercedes' NTG7 MBUX infotainment system with Car-to-X and Mercedes Me connectivity. On the Maybach S-Class, you also get a 12.3-inch digital instrument, a 3D unit on the S680, and all digital real estate gives the Maybach S-Class a futuristic look. Audiophiles will appreciate the Maybach S's Burmester 4D surround sound system.
When compared to the regular S-Class, the Maybach S-Class gets an even more exclusive design with a progressive diamond pattern and double seam, as well as optional ambient lighting. There are a smattering of Maybach badges placed in the interior – on the seat backrests, the steering wheel, and the illuminated stainless-steel entry sills – lest you mistake this for an ordinary S, which is highly unlikely given that the cabin is finished in swaths of Nappa leather and high-quality wood. The Maybach S Class receives a First-Class rear seat package with two 11.6-inch screens for entertainment, and rear seat occupants can control the infotainment system via a touchscreen tablet.
Owners who rely on a chauffeur will appreciate the Maybach S-electrically Class's operated rear comfort doors, which the driver can even open! With 13 airbags, safety is also prioritized on the Maybach S Class.
The Maybach S-Class is available in two variants, each with a different engine option. The locally assembled S580 is powered by a 4-litre V8 petrol engine that is assisted by a 48-volt onboard electrical system and produces 496bhp and 700Nm of torque. The S680, on the other hand, is powered by a 6-litre V12 engine with 603bhp and 900Nm of torque. The V8 accelerates from 0 to 100kmph within 4.8 seconds, while the V12 takes 4.5 seconds. Both engines are electronically limited to a top speed of 250kmph. The power from these engines is distributed to all four wheels via the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. Both of these engines also meet Euro 6 emission standards.
Mercedes-Benz India will offer the Maybach S-Class in two variants, the S580 and the S680, with the S580 being locally assembled and the S680 being imported as a CBU. Prices for the S580 with the V8 will start at Rs 2.5 crore, while the S680 with the V12 will start at Rs 3.2 crore, ex-showroom.
The pricing figure translates to a nearly Rs 85 lakh premium over the most expensive regular S-Class, but given the luxury, opulence, and snob value of the Maybach badge. There's little doubt that the Maybach S-Class will be a popular choice among purchasers looking for alternatives to the Bentley Flying Spur or the Rolls-Royce Ghost – and the fact that all S680 cars have already been sold out until 2023 demonstrates this.
