Suzuki's Jimny has been a huge hit in global markets, thanks to its outstanding off-road credentials. Seeing the huge success of Jimny, Mitsubishi and Toyota are also developing smaller lifestyle off-roaders for global markets. We already informed you that Toyota will re-introduce the Mini Land Cruiser FJ in 2025-26. On the flip side, Mitsubishi is reportedly planning to re-launch the Pajero Mini lifestyle SUV.
First launched in 1994, the Pajero Mini was one of the most successful off-roaders in global markets. Discontinued in 2012, the small lifestyle SUV is likely to return in 2026. The SUV will retain the original squarish, boxy design of the original model; however, it will come with modern styling elements. Mitsubishi's mini vehicles are developed by NMKB, which is a joint venture with Nissan.
It is claimed that the upcoming Pajero Mini will also be made by NMKV, but Mitsubishi is leading the development. The SUV will be offered with gasoline engine with a mild hybrid system. It is also expected to receive an electric derivative. Nissan will also have its own version of the Pajero Mini. It will come with a special 4WD system with high running performance. The mini off-roader will be launched in a 3-door version, and all-wheel-drive layout will come as standard.
Japanese automaker is working on an all-new lifestyle SUV, which will be positioned below the Fortuner. Rumoured to be called the Toyota FJ Cruiser, the new SUV will measure around 4.5 meters in length. It is reportedly to be based on Toyota's IMV0 platform that underpins the Hilux Champ. This model will be sold in markets where Corolla Cross is not on sale. There is a possibility of this lifestyle SUV arriving in India where it could fit well between the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Fortuner.
The styling of the mini Land Cruiser will be inspired by the Compact Cruiser EV concept. The SUV will be powered by a 2.8-litre, 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine benefitted with a belt-driven electric motor/generator, and a small lithium battery and a convertor. This engine churns out 204hp of power and 500Nm of torque. It could also receive a 2.7-litre petrol engine that produces 166bhp. An automatic gearbox will come as standard, while 4x4 drivetrain will come with multiple drive modes.
