Next-Gen Tata Harrier, Safari to Get New AWD-Ready Platform

Tata Motors has officially begun work on the next-gen Harrier and Safari SUVs. Codenamed Taurus (Harrier) and Leo (Safari), the upcoming models will be based on a brand-new platform that can support petrol, diesel, and electric powertrains, along with all-wheel drive (AWD) capability.

Current Platform Has Limitations

The existing Harrier and Safari are underpinned by the Omega architecture, which is derived from Land Rover’s D8 platform. While strong and proven, this setup comes with limitations, especially the inability to offer AWD in internal combustion engine (ICE) variants. Tata did manage to introduce AWD in the Harrier EV using a reworked version of the platform.

QWD Likely to Be Tata’s New AWD Branding

With the next-gen SUVs, Tata is expected to overcome these limitations. The new platform is being designed to offer a true AWD experience across both ICE and EV variants. Interestingly, Tata may brand this system as QWD (Quad Wheel Drive) — a term it recently introduced with the Harrier EV. This move could help Tata build a unique identity for its AWD offerings.

Next-Gen Harrier, Safari - Petrol, Diesel, and Electric Options Planned

The upcoming SUVs will feature a wide range of powertrains:

- A new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine
- An updated 2.0-litre diesel engine, now being developed in-house under a licensing agreement with Stellantis
- An evolved version of the electric motor seen on the current Harrier EV

AWD to Make a Strong Return

Tata’s plan to offer AWD (or QWD) will bring back the rough-road credibility that many Safari fans have missed. The original Safari was known for its off-road ability, and the next-gen version aims to revive that image.

Bigger Dimensions and Tech Upgrade

Sources reveal that the new Harrier and Safari will grow in length by around 100-200mm, offering more cabin space, especially useful for the three-row Safari. Tata is also working with Chinese tech firm Desay to develop a new electrical (E&E) architecture. This will allow for the integration of modern infotainment systems and autonomous driving features.

Next-Gen Harrier, Safari Expected Launch Timeline

While the official launch of the next-gen Harrier and Safari has not been confirmed, development is in full swing. Stay tuned for more info!
