Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been one of the most popular and iconic lifestyle SUVs on sale. Since its inception, the Stuttgart-based automaker has not launched a new derivative of this iconic SUV; however, several special editions were introduced for a limited period. Finally, Mercedes has confirmed that a smaller and an affordable derivative of the G-Class lifestyle SUV is under development.
Mercedes-Benz calls it the "biggest-ever product launch campaign." The company confirms that the legendary G-Class family will be expanded with a new smaller version. In fact, a new teaser image with the "g" appears with a fully camouflaged boxy SUV at the bottom.
For people not in the know, Mercedes-Benz had released a design sketch of an all-new SUV in September 2023 at the IAA Munich show. The company's CEO Ola Kallenius refers to the new SUV as the "Little G". It is expected that the baby G-Class could be introduced in both three- and five-door avatars.
Mercedes-Benz is yet to reveal details about the new G-Class SUV. It is too early to comment on whether the Little G will share its hardware and body-on-frame chassis with the original SUV or will it be based on a monocoque platform. We expect the new SUV to be based on the ladder-frame chassis and will have true off-road credentials.
Some media reports claim that the new smaller G-Class could share its mechanics with the next-gen CLA, which will be revealed in March 2025. This suggests that the SUV won't use the bigger G-Class platform. The SUV is likely to be offered with multiple engine options including an electric unit. The SUV could also get a new 1.5L 4-cylinder petrol engine with a mild-hybrid setup.
Not just the baby G-Class, Mercedes-Benz will introduce the new CLA, GLA, EQB, GLB and EQB in the next few years. Moreover, the electric versions of the C-Class, E-Class and GLC are also under development. The brand's popular S-Class will also receive a mid-life upgrade in 2026.
