Tesla is getting closer to an Indian launch. After looking for talent in India, the company is now searching for land where it will set up its first factory. Sources have revealed that the most preferred location for this new factory, as selected by Tesla, is Maharashtra state.
Tesla's decision to establish a factory in India follows a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Elon Musk in the US. Musk, in the meeting, mentioned reducing import duties on electric vehicles (EVs) to allow Tesla to enter the market in India. Tesla has been scouting for sites in Maharashtra as it already has an office in Pune and most of its suppliers are also based there.
Maharashtra is a suitable destination for Tesla as it is near key manufacturing regions. The state has locations such as Chakan and Chikhali, which are famous for automobile production. Chakan has numerous giant firms such as Tata Motors and Volkswagen. The Maharashtra government has already provided Tesla with some land near these locations to establish its factory.
While there are negotiations, nothing is settled yet. Tesla is also considering major factors like how close the property is to a port. Exporting cars abroad would be crucial. Maharashtra authorities tread carefully in the talks since previously, the state had lost large deals to other locations, such as Vedanta-Foxconn's chip factory and the Tata-Airbus plane manufacturing plant.
Following the meeting with Prime Minister Modi, Tesla placed 13 job postings on LinkedIn for positions in Mumbai and Delhi. These are the jobs that were posted: service, sales, and customer care. That indicates Tesla will be opening showrooms in India in the very near future even before the factory is up and running.
Tesla has also apparently had discussions with the senior officials of other Indian businesses, such as Tata Motors. This also could be viewed that Tesla is looking for Indian partners or wishes to buy Indian companies' components.
Tesla has been attempting to enter India for a few years. Tesla planned to have an office and a showroom in Mumbai in 2021 but was unable to make the transaction happen because it was unable to agree with the Indian government on lowering import duties. Tesla had requested lower import duties on automobiles, but the government replied that Tesla must establish a local plant first.
In 2023, Tesla had discussions with the Indian government for procuring Indian components from local sources. Late in the year, Tesla leased a five-year office in Pune, indicating it was serious about going ahead in India.
India launched a fresh EV policy in 2024 to entice the likes of Tesla. The policy grants tax incentives to companies which invest at least $500 million in producing products in India. Musk was to travel to India in April 2024 and finalize Tesla's ambitions but cancelled his flight and went to China instead.
Despite all these delays, Tesla remains committed to the Indian market, and Maharashtra would be the hub of those plans. The entry of Tesla in India is appearing to take place in the very near future.
