Toyota’s much-anticipated compact Land Cruiser, often called the “baby” Land Cruiser, is expected to launch in early 2026. Recently, a new patent drawing has surfaced, giving us the clearest look yet at the compact SUV’s rugged exterior design.
Since the teaser in August 2023, Toyota has kept details about this model under wraps. Many expect it to revive the FJ Cruiser nameplate, but the company has not officially confirmed this. The patent drawing, filed last year and recently made public, provides a more detailed look at the vehicle’s design.

The drawing reveals a five-door compact SUV with a boxy, utilitarian shape. It closely matches Toyota’s official teaser, including the LED headlight design. The vehicle features strong front fenders, thick C-pillars, and a vertical rear end with a full-size spare tire mounted on the tailgate.
The lower body has unpainted plastic cladding on bumpers, fenders, and side skirts. This classic off-road styling hints at the SUV’s rugged nature. The ground clearance appears high, suitable for off-roading. Though the patent wheels are placeholders, the final model will likely have serious off-road tyres.
This model is seen as a natural evolution of the 2021 Compact Cruiser EV concept but larger in size. Reports from Japan say the production version will be about 4,500 mm (177.2 inches) long, placing it in the compact SUV segment.
Unlike the larger Land Cruiser 250 and 300 Series, which use Toyota’s TNGA-F platform, the new FJ Cruiser will use the IMV-0 platform. This platform is shared with the next Hilux and Fortuner models and is expected to be an upgraded ladder-frame chassis.
This chassis type is ideal for off-road use and will likely give the FJ Cruiser an advantage over unibody rivals like the Ford Bronco Sport.
The FJ Cruiser will probably use a 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine in some markets. Toyota is expected to keep a traditional 4WD system standard, maintaining the Land Cruiser’s off-road heritage.
While the patent drawing may not show the final production design, it gives a clear preview of what Toyota plans for the new compact Land Cruiser.
