It is no secret that Mahindra is exploring hybrid powertrain to power its existing models, as the demand for such strong hybrid cars is on rise in India. The company is evaluating range extenders for its Born electric vehicles, including XEV 9e and BE 6. On the other hand, the ICE-powered vehicles, including the XUV 3XO will receive a new in-house developed Series-Parallel hybrid powertrain.
Mahindra is testing a camouflaged XUV 3XO with the next generation ADAS technology. This comes as a significant development with Mahindra and Bosch jointly developing India-specific ADAS systems. Adding to it, the company is also testing the XUV 3XO electric. The EV is rumoured to be launched before the end of this financial year.
The Mahindra XUV 3XO strong hybrid is expected to be launched sometime in 2026. It will come with a series-parallel hybrid system. The existing 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine will be used as a core of the new hybrid powertrain. It will have an electric motor, a smaller battery and a starter-generator. The electric motor and combustion engine will work together or independently depending on the driving conditions. The Grand Vitara hybrid and Hyryder hybrid are also fitted with similar powertrain. In this system, the electric motor can power the SUV during low-speed driving.
Mahindra is also developing a range-extender hybrid powertrain using the 1.2L turbo petrol engine. The gasoline unit will work as a generator to recharge the battery, which will power the electric motors that drive the wheels. Also See - Tata Sierra Production Model Spotted
Maruti Suzuki is also developing an affordable range-extender powertrain, which will be based on the existing 1.2L 3-cylinder, naturally-aspirated gasoline unit. This powertrain will debut in the Fronx facelift scheduled to be launched in 2026. Adding to it, Maruti’s affordable cars, including Baleno, Swift and the upcoming sub-4 meter MPV, will use this new hybrid powertrain.
