Japanese car manufacturer, Suzuki had announced to introduce 17 new BEV (Battery Electric Vehicles) in Europe, Japan and India by 2030. A new media report from Japan claims that the next electric vehicle from Suzuki will be an entry-level hatchback, which will also arrive in our market. Adding to it, the Maruti Suzuki eWX is most likely to launch in 2026.
Maruti Suzuki has already patented the design of the eWX electric hatchback in the country. As a reminder, the company had showcased the eWX concept at the Japan Mobility Show in 2023. This shows that the tall-boy electric hatchback could be the part of Maruti Suzuki's 4 EVs planned for the Indian market.
For people not in the know, Maruti Suzuki had imported multiple Wagon R electric hatchbacks for testing purposes. The company had plans to introduce the Wagon R EV as its official entry in the electric vehicle segment of the country. However, the plan was cancelled due to high development cost and less range.
The eWX could be the next Wagon R electric for the homegrown market. The electric hatchback has a tallboy design with focus on practicality and spacious cabin, which is also associated with the Wagon R.
The eWX measures 3,395 mm in length, 1475 mm in width and 1620 mm in height. It is significantly smaller than the Wagon R hatchback, which is 3655mm long and 1620mm wide. In fact, the electric hatchback is smaller than the S-Presso. We believe that Maruti Suzuki could use the versatile e HEARTECT architecture of the e Vitara to increase the size of the eWX for the Indian market.
The Maruti Suzuki eWX with size and practicality similar to the Wagon R could be a game changer in the Indian EV segment. The all-electric hatchback will be a direct rival to the Tata Tiago EV and the Citroen eC3. In fact,
The design patent of the hatchback looks similar to the original concept showcased in 2023. The electric hatchback retains the tall-boy stance with boxy silhouette. It is fitted with C-shaped LED lighting system, which are connected by thin LED strip forming a curved rectangular shape. The rear also has the similar Curved rectangular lighting elements
Suzuki has added light green treatment all-around including the alloy wheels. It has a flat roof, aero-optimized wheels, high-set bonnet and flat rear profile with a large glass area.
The Suzuki eWX concept has a uniquely designed cabin, finished in a dual-tone black and green dashboard with silver treatment. The dashboard has Curved rectangular shape that houses AC vents and an integrated screen setup for infotainment and driver's display. It has the uniquely styled steering wheel and rotary dial for the drive mode shifter.
Suzuki is yet to reveal the exact specifications and battery pack details of the eWX electric hatchback. However, it is confirmed that the entry-level model will have a claimed range of up to 230km in a single charge. We believe that the Maruti Suzuki eWX four-door electric hatch could offer a range of around 300-400km in a single charge.
It is expected that the production version of the Suzuki eWX will be revealed in 2026. If reports are to be believed, MSIL is developing a new sub-4 meter electric MPV based on the Spacia for the Indian market. This electric MPV is scheduled to be launched in 2026. We expect the Maruti Suzuki eWX based electric hatch will debut in India sometime in 2026-27.
