Tata Altroz EV Launch Pushed Back, Still in Development

Tata Altroz EV, first showcased as a concept at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show and later at Auto Expo 2020, is still in the pipeline. Internally codenamed "Ascot," the electric version of Tata’s premium hatchback has faced several delays in its journey to production.

Tata Altroz EV Launch Delayed Due to Battery Placement Issues

One of the major challenges has been the battery packaging. The placement of the battery pack under the floor lowered the Altroz EV's ground clearance by about 20mm, bringing it down to 145mm. Raising the car's height was not a feasible option, as it would have affected the Altroz’s design and sporty stance. These issues have delayed the EV’s launch, which was initially planned after the Nexon EV.

Tata Still Committed to Altroz EV

In early 2023, Tata Motors’ Managing Director Shailesh Chandra had stated that the Altroz EV would arrive after the Harrier EV and Sierra EV. However, the launch now appears to be postponed even further.

Altroz EV to Share Platform with Punch EV

Tata plans to base the Altroz EV on the same Acti.ev architecture used in the Punch EV. The Punch EV is due for a facelift around the festive season and is likely to get a larger battery pack as part of its update. This new platform could solve the earlier battery packaging issue, paving the way for the Altroz EV’s development.

Expected Range and Power

Both the Altroz EV and updated Punch EV are expected to offer similar battery options—25kWh and 35kWh—with an ARAI-certified range of 265km and 365km. Power output is also expected to be in the range of 82hp to 122hp.

Pricing

Tata Altroz EV is likely to be priced between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 14.5 lakh, similar to the Punch EV. However, Tata is confident that both models will appeal to different buyer groups, avoiding overlap in sales.
