Automakers have released their sales numbers for the month of May 2025. Last month's sales brought a smile for a few brands, including Mahindra, Kia, Toyota and MG Motor India; however, Hyundai and Tata Motors reported a significant decline in their sales. A tough fight is going on between Mahindra, Hyundai and Tata Motors to take second position in the list of top car manufacturers in India.
In the past 3 months, sales numbers reveal that the homegrown automaker Mahindra strengthened its position and grabbed 2nd position. Let’s talk in detail about the sales of these three manufacturers in the month of May 2025.
In the domestic market, Mahindra sold a total of 52,431 SUVs in the month of May 2025 as against 43,218 units in the same month last year. The company reported a Year-on-Year sales growth of 21 per cent. Mahindra’s cumulative sales (exports + domestic) stand at 54,819 units last month.
In the current financial year (April-May, 2025), Mahindra sold a total of 104761 SUVs in the Indian market, reporting a Year-on-Year sales growth of 24 per cent. The company sold 84,226 SUVs in the same period last year, that’s April-May 2024.
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) recorded a cumulative sales of 58,701 units in the month of May 2025. In the domestic market, the company sold 43,861 units while 14,840 units were exported to other markets. Hyundai had sold 49,151 vehicles in the country in May 2024. The Korean brand has reported a year-on-year sales decline of 11.37 percent.
Commenting on HMIL sales, Mr. Tarun Garg, Whole-time Director and Chief Operating Officer, HMIL said, “HMIL’s total sales volume for May 2025 stood at 58,701 units. May is a month of our routine week-long biannual maintenance shutdown at our Chennai manufacturing facility which affects availability of few critical models. We continue to witness consistent growth in our exports volume and this is a testament to the 'Make in India, Made for the World' philosophy that we passionately uphold. Going forward, we remain hopeful of a steady increase in demand for both domestic as well as international shipments with reduced uncertainty on the geo-political front and improved macro-economic situation.”
Tata Motors stands at 4th position in the list of top car manufacturers in India. The company sold a total of 42,040 vehicles in May 2025 as compared to 47,075 units in the same month last year. Tata Motors reported a year-on-year sales decline of 11 per cent. In the domestic market, the company sold 41,557 passenger vehicles including electric vehicles while 483 units were exported. Tata sold 5,685 electric vehicles in May 2025, reporting a marginal YoY sales increase of 2 per cent.
