New Car Buying Platform
• New Porsche Boxster and Cayman is set to be launched as a game-changing electric sports car • Design is expected to draw inspiration from the Porsche Mission R • Porsche is also developing a new flagship electric SUV
Successor to Porsche’s popular 718 Boxster and Cayman models are all set to arrive by 2025, albite as EV only. As confirmed by Oliver Blume, the Chief Executive Officer of Porsche, the next-generation of the 718 range will be built on a bespoke electric sports car architecture, designed to mimic the existing ICE models’ mid-engine characteristics. This platform could go on to underpin future models from Lamborghini and Audi. Additionally, the new-gen Cayman will be the alternative to the likes of upcoming electric sports cars from Alpine and Lotus.
The new Porsche Boxster and Cayman models are likely to draw inspiration from the Porsche Mission R, unveiled at the Munich Auto show last year. A unique battery arrangement has also been made for the new Porsche’s which is referred to as the e-core layout; this will enable the brand to provide as lowest seating position and centre of gravity as possible.
According to Porsche, the new sports cars will use the bespoke EV platform, as there are many compromises while converting the ICE platform to electric. Porsche car also added that the new platform can be used for top-performance cars of sister brands Audi and Lamborghini.
The e-core layout places the battery pack (the heaviest element of the vehicle) right behind the driver but ahead of a rear axle, mimicking the layout of an ICE model. The concept to adopt this unique battery layout is to make this sportscar as low as possible and to minimize the drag. Usually, this is impossible for most traditional skateboard architecture with underfloor batteries, but Porsche would make it possible with a different construction.
As confirmed by Porsche, a new electric SUV will also arrive that will sit above the Cayenne. It will take on EV SUVs such as BMW iX. The all-new electric SUV is expected to be based on Volkswagen Groups’ Scalable System Platform (SSP) just like the third- generation Porsche Panamera. Also, the company has also committed to launching the ICE based Macan EV in the market by 2024.
Furthermore, the company aims for pure EVs to account 50 percent of its global sales by 2025 and 80 percent by 2030. However, the launch date is yet to be confirmed for pure electric equivalents to the Porsche Cayenne SUV.
